I was carrying two heavy grocery bags when someone shouted,<\/p>\n
“Hey! You!”<\/p>\n
I looked up.<\/p>\n
A woman was marching straight toward me through the parking lot.<\/p>\n
She looked furious.<\/p>\n
At first, I assumed she was talking to someone behind me.<\/p>\n
She wasn’t.<\/p>\n
My name is Adam.<\/p>\n
I live downtown.<\/p>\n
I don’t own a car.<\/p>\n
Between the subway, buses, and walking, I’ve never needed one.<\/p>\n
That afternoon, I had taken the bus to the grocery store and was cutting through a parking lot on my way home.<\/p>\n

That was enough to make me today’s target.<\/p>\n
The woman stopped directly in front of me.<\/p>\n
“You need to move your truck.”<\/p>\n
I blinked.<\/p>\n

Both vehicles were neatly inside their painted parking lines.<\/p>\n
Neither looked damaged.<\/p>\n
Neither blocked the other.<\/p>\n
I looked back at her.<\/p>\n
“I don’t own a truck.”<\/p>\n
She laughed sarcastically.<\/p>\n
“Really?”<\/p>\n
“So you’re just standing beside it for fun?”<\/p>\n
I held up my grocery bags.<\/p>\n
“I’m walking home.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t even own a car.”<\/p>\n
Instead of calming down, she became even louder.<\/p>\n
“Don’t lie to me!”<\/p>\n
“You parked too close!”<\/p>\n
“I can’t get into my car!”<\/p>\n
Several shoppers slowed down to watch.<\/p>\n
I looked again.<\/p>\n
There appeared to be plenty of space on the driver’s side of her hatchback.<\/p>\n
I politely suggested,<\/p>\n
“Could you enter from the passenger side if it’s a little tight?”<\/p>\n
She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n
“I shouldn’t have to.”<\/p>\n
Then she shouted loudly enough for half the parking lot to hear,<\/p>\n
“People like you shouldn’t be allowed to drive trucks!”<\/p>\n
I couldn’t help smiling.<\/p>\n
“That would be easy.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t drive one.”<\/p>\n
At that exact moment, I heard a calm voice behind me.<\/p>\n
“Is there a problem?”<\/p>\n
We both turned.<\/p>\n
A man wearing work boots and a reflective safety vest was walking toward the white pickup.<\/p>\n
He held a key fob in one hand.<\/p>\n
The truck’s lights flashed.<\/p>\n
The woman immediately pointed at me.<\/p>\n
“This guy parked too close to my car!”<\/p>\n
The man looked at me.<\/p>\n
Then at my grocery bags.<\/p>\n
Then back at her.<\/p>\n
“He did?”<\/p>\n
“Yes!”<\/p>\n
“He refuses to move it!”<\/p>\n
The man smiled politely.<\/p>\n
“Ma’am…”<\/p>\n
“It’s my truck.”<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
She looked from him…<\/p>\n
To me…<\/p>\n
Then back again.<\/p>\n
“But…”<\/p>\n
“He was standing here.”<\/p>\n
I laughed.<\/p>\n
“I was walking.”<\/p>\n
The truck owner glanced at the parking lines.<\/p>\n
Everything was well within the marked spaces.<\/p>\n
He calmly replied,<\/p>\n
“It looks like both vehicles are legally parked.”<\/p>\n
“If you’re uncomfortable with the space, I can back out for a moment while you leave.”<\/p>\n
She hesitated.<\/p>\n
The anger she’d carried moments earlier seemed to disappear.<\/p>\n
“No…”<\/p>\n
“I…”<\/p>\n
She looked at me.<\/p>\n
“I thought…”<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
“I know.”<\/p>\n
The truck owner backed out anyway.<\/p>\n
Not because he had done anything wrong.<\/p>\n
Simply because it took less than thirty seconds and solved the immediate problem.<\/p>\n
She drove away without another word.<\/p>\n
As he pulled back into the space, the truck owner chuckled.<\/p>\n
“I’m Mike.”<\/p>\n
“Adam.”<\/p>\n
He looked at my grocery bags.<\/p>\n
“Need a hand carrying those?”<\/p>\n
I smiled.<\/p>\n
“I think I’ve had enough excitement for one afternoon.”<\/p>\n
We both laughed.<\/p>\n
Then he said something I never forgot.<\/p>\n
“You know…”<\/p>\n
“It’s amazing how often people become certain before they become curious.”<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
“Curiosity would’ve saved all of us ten minutes.”<\/p>\n
Several weeks later, I ran into Mike again at the same grocery store.<\/p>\n
This time we planned our shopping together.<\/p>\n
He jokingly asked,<\/p>\n
“Still truckless?”<\/p>\n
“Still truckless.”<\/p>\n
We both laughed.<\/p>\n
People often assume confidence means being certain.<\/p>\n
I’ve learned the opposite.<\/p>\n
Real confidence leaves room for being wrong.<\/p>\n
That afternoon, the woman never asked whose truck it was.<\/p>\n
She never asked whether I even owned a vehicle.<\/p>\n
She simply decided she already knew the answer.<\/p>\n
Sometimes our biggest mistakes begin with one dangerous sentence:<\/p>\n
“I already know.”<\/p>\n
The truth is…<\/p>\n
We usually don’t.<\/p>\n
And asking one simple question before making an accusation can save everyone a great deal of embarrassment.<\/p>\n
