A fourth-grade teacher wanted to teach her students about logic.<\/p>\n
She stood at the front of the classroom and said,<\/p>\n
“Let’s imagine something.”<\/p>\n
The children leaned forward.<\/p>\n
“There’s a man fishing in the middle of a river. Suddenly, he falls out of his boat.”<\/p>\n
A few students gasped.<\/p>\n
“He can’t swim,” the teacher continued, “so he starts shouting for help.”<\/p>\n
She paused.<\/p>\n
“His wife hears him and immediately runs toward the riverbank.”<\/p>\n
Then she asked,<\/p>\n
“Why do you think she ran there?”<\/p>\n
A little girl raised her hand.<\/p>\n
“To save him!”<\/p>\n
“Good answer,” the teacher said.<\/p>\n
Another student called out,<\/p>\n
“To throw him a rope!”<\/p>\n
“Excellent.”<\/p>\n
The teacher smiled.<\/p>\n
“But let’s think carefully.”<\/p>\n
She pointed toward the imaginary river.<\/p>\n
“If she knows her husband can’t swim, why would she run to the riverbank instead of jumping into the water?”<\/p>\n
The classroom became quiet.<\/p>\n
The students started thinking.<\/p>\n
Finally, a little boy slowly raised his hand.<\/p>\n
The teacher smiled.<\/p>\n
“Yes?”<\/p>\n
He answered confidently,<\/p>\n
“Because she knows he’ll eventually float there.”<\/p>\n
The entire classroom exploded with laughter.<\/p>\n
The teacher laughed too.<\/p>\n
Then she asked,<\/p>\n
“And how do you know that?”<\/p>\n
The boy shrugged.<\/p>\n
“Because if he were going to swim back, she wouldn’t need to run to the bank!”<\/p>\n
The teacher covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.<\/p>\n
“Well…”<\/p>\n
She shook her head.<\/p>\n
“That’s certainly one way to look at it.”<\/p>\n
The children continued laughing.<\/p>\n
Then one student raised his hand and asked,<\/p>\n
“Wait, Mrs. Carter…”<\/p>\n
“Yes?”<\/p>\n
“Was this supposed to be a lesson about logic?”<\/p>\n
The teacher smiled.<\/p>\n
“It was.”<\/p>\n
The boy grinned.<\/p>\n
“I think we learned something else.”<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
“Never give a fourth-grader too many details.”<\/p>\n
The whole class burst out laughing again.<\/p>\n
And the teacher had to admit…<\/p>\n
