\u201cYou certainly married up,\u201d she’d say.<\/p>\n
Then she’d glance at my clothes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome people don’t know how to dress properly.\u201d<\/p>\n
If I cooked dinner:<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

The vacations.<\/p>\n
The college accounts.<\/p>\n
Even the money Carol believed came from her son’s career.<\/p>\n
All of it traced back to the business I had started before I ever met my husband.<\/p>\n
A business I’d built from a tiny rented office with two employees.<\/p>\n
A business that eventually became worth millions.<\/p>\n
My husband had never needed to support me.<\/p>\n
I’d simply chosen to build a life with him.<\/p>\n
And I’d never told Carol because I never wanted money to determine how she treated me.<\/p>\n
Apparently, I had underestimated her.<\/p>\n
Carol stared at the document.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

My daughter looked at me.<\/p>\n

I turned toward Carol.<\/p>\n

Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n
