Six years ago, we sold the five-bedroom house where we had raised our children and moved into a townhouse in a 55-and-over community just a mile from our old neighborhood.<\/p>\n
People called it downsizing.<\/p>\n
We never saw it that way.<\/p>\n
We called it resizing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n We still had plenty of room for our children and eight grandchildren. Our primary bedroom was on the main level, along with the kitchen, dining room, family room, living room, and office.<\/p>\n Downstairs, we had a guest suite where the grandchildren could sleep, play, and make as much noise as they wanted.<\/p>\n The best part?<\/p>\n No more mowing.<\/p>\n No gutters.<\/p>\n No giant cedar deck to stain every few years.<\/p>\n No spending an entire Saturday clearing branches and leaves.<\/p>\n For the first time in decades, we could lock the front door and leave for a trip without worrying about what we’d come home to.<\/p>\n We thought we’d found the perfect next chapter.<\/p>\n Then one afternoon, my oldest son called.<\/p>\n \u201cDad, can we talk about the townhouse?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n There was a pause.<\/p>\n \u201cMom and I were wondering if you two should think about moving again.\u201d<\/p>\n I laughed.<\/p>\n \u201cMoving where?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTo something smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n I looked around the room.<\/p>\n \u201cOur house?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYeah.
