The officer arrived twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n
The customer looked confused.<\/p>\n

I pointed toward the truck.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat belonged to my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stared at me.<\/p>\n
\u201cI swear, I didn’t steal it.\u201d<\/p>\n
I believed him.<\/p>\n
And that turned out to be important.<\/p>\n
The officer checked the title history.<\/p>\n
The truck had passed through three owners.<\/p>\n
But the first seller had used a fake identity.<\/p>\n
Then we found something else.<\/p>\n
The original license plate number had been written on an old maintenance sticker inside the doorframe.<\/p>\n
I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n
Donna had put it there herself.<\/p>\n
The detective asked me if I remembered who had access to her driveway around the time the truck disappeared.<\/p>\n
I did.<\/p>\n
One person.<\/p>\n
A man who had been helping my family during the week of Donna’s funeral.<\/p>\n
Her ex-boyfriend.<\/p>\n
We hadn’t suspected him because he had been one of the people helping us grieve.<\/p>\n
The detective dug deeper.<\/p>\n
His name appeared in an old towing record.<\/p>\n
Then another record.<\/p>\n
Then a storage-unit rental.<\/p>\n
Inside that unit, police found paperwork connected to stolen vehicles.<\/p>\n
Including the original bill of sale for Donna’s truck.<\/p>\n
The man had stolen it less than a week after her funeral.<\/p>\n
He’d changed the plates, altered the paperwork, and sold it through a chain of unsuspecting buyers.<\/p>\n
Eight years later, the truck had finally come back to the only place where someone could recognize it from a tiny burn mark nobody else knew existed.<\/p>\n
The customer wasn’t arrested.<\/p>\n
He surrendered the truck once the investigation confirmed the history.<\/p>\n
A few weeks later, the sheriff called me.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s yours now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
I couldn’t speak.<\/p>\n
I drove that old F-150 home.<\/p>\n
The paint was faded.<\/p>\n
The seat had a tear.<\/p>\n
The engine needed work.<\/p>\n
But it was Donna’s.<\/p>\n
I fixed it myself.<\/p>\n
When I finally started the engine, I sat behind the wheel for a long time.<\/p>\n
Then I laughed.<\/p>\n
