I am almost 72, and my wife is 71.<\/p>\n
Six years ago, we made a decision that surprised almost everyone who knew us.<\/p>\n
We sold the five-bedroom house where we had raised our four children.<\/p>\n
It was the house where birthdays were celebrated, Christmas mornings happened, teenagers slammed doors, and grandchildren eventually came running through the same rooms.<\/p>\n
We had lived there for years.<\/p>\n
But maintaining it had become exhausting.<\/p>\n
The yard always needed something.<\/p>\n
The gutters needed cleaning.<\/p>\n
Tree debris covered the driveway.<\/p>\n
The roof needed attention.<\/p>\n
And that huge cedar deck seemed to require staining every couple of years.<\/p>\n
I finally realized something:<\/p>\n
I wasn’t spending my retirement enjoying my home. I was spending it maintaining it.<\/strong><\/p>\n So we bought a townhouse in a 55-and-over community.<\/p>\n It was only about a mile from our old neighborhood.<\/p>\n Some people assumed we’d made a dramatic downsizing move.<\/p>\n We hadn’t.<\/p>\n We resized<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Our five children had homes of their own, but we still wanted enough space for everyone to gather.<\/p>\n Our new place gave us exactly that.<\/p>\n We have a large primary bedroom on the main level and a shared office.<\/p>\n Most of our daily life happens downstairs\u2014our kitchen, dining room, family room, and living room.<\/p>\n But downstairs doesn’t mean cramped.<\/p>\n We also have a guest suite on the lower level.<\/p>\n That turned out to be one of the best decisions we made.<\/p>\n When our children visit, they have somewhere comfortable to stay.<\/p>\n And with eight grandchildren ranging from two to sixteen, that lower level becomes their territory.<\/p>\n Toys.<\/p>\n Games.<\/p>\n Sleeping bags.<\/p>\n Laughter.<\/p>\n The occasional argument over whose turn it is.<\/p>\n Exactly what we wanted.<\/p>\n The biggest difference, though, isn’t the house itself.<\/p>\n It’s what we don’t<\/strong> have anymore.<\/p>\n No giant lawn waiting to be mowed.<\/p>\n No deck demanding attention.<\/p>\n No weekend disappearing because I needed to clean gutters or deal with fallen branches.<\/p>\n If we want to travel, we lock the door and leave.<\/p>\n That’s it.<\/p>\n And six years later, I can honestly say I don’t miss the old maintenance.<\/p>\n I miss the memories.<\/p>\n But I don’t miss the work.<\/p>\n Our children still come over.<\/p>\n Our grandchildren still fill the house with noise.<\/p>\n We still host holiday dinners.<\/p>\n We still have room for everyone.<\/p>\n The difference is that when everyone leaves, my wife and I aren’t staring at a list of twenty things that need fixing.<\/p>\n We can sit down.<\/p>\n Have coffee.<\/p>\n Talk.<\/p>\n Enjoy our evening.<\/p>\n Recently, one of our children asked me if I ever regretted selling the family home.<\/p>\n I thought about it for a moment.<\/p>\n Then I said:<\/p>\n \u201cNo. I didn’t sell our family.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe just stopped paying for rooms we no longer needed.\u201d<\/p>\n That’s when I realized what retirement housing should really be about.<\/p>\n Not having the biggest house.<\/p>\n Not impressing the neighbors.<\/p>\n Not holding onto something simply because you’ve had it for decades.<\/p>\n It’s about having a home that fits the life you’re actually living.<\/p>\n And for us, this townhouse does.<\/p>\n We didn’t lose our family home.<\/p>\n We gained something we hadn’t had in years:<\/p>\n time.<\/strong><\/p>\n And at our age, that’s worth more than another five bedrooms ever could be.<\/p>\n We Sold the Home Where We Raised Our Children\u2014Six Years Later, We Realized We Had Made the Right Choice I am almost 72, and my wife is 71.
