There are three cars parked here.”

He went silent.

Then said,

“I’m looking at my schedule. Nobody on my crew put vehicles there.”

I walked around the cars.

No keys.

No notes.

Nothing.

The garage door had been closed.

The house was still under construction.

My best guess was that one of the neighbors had decided to use my garage because there was a chance of snow that night.

At first, I thought I’d just leave them there.

But the longer I stared at them, the angrier I became.

Who parks three vehicles inside someone else’s unfinished house without asking?

So I called a towing company.

I told them the vehicles were illegally parked on private property.

A couple of hours later, all three were gone.

I locked the garage and went home.

The next morning, my contractor called me.

His voice sounded completely different.

“Are you sitting down?”

“No. Why?”

“The police are here.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“They’re investigating the theft of the…”

He stopped.

“The dropped.

“They aren’t stolen.”

“What?”

“The police are investigating the theft of something else.”

“What?”

He hesitated.

“The drywall.”

I thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

Apparently, when the police arrived, they had discovered something very strange.

The three vehicles I’d towed away were registered to three different families in the neighborhood.

And all three families claimed they had never parked their vehicles in my garage.

I drove back to the house immediately.

A police officer met me outside.

“Are you the owner?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the garage.

“Did you have these vehicles towed last night?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because someone parked them inside my garage without permission.”

He exchanged a glance with another officer.

“Did you notice anything unusual about the vehicles?”

“No.”

“What about the garage?”

I shook my head.

“Everything looked normal.”

He asked me to walk inside.

Then he pointed toward the drywall.

“Look closely.”

I did.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then I noticed the seams.

Some of the drywall looked newer than the rest.

The contractor walked over and frowned.

“That isn’t ours.”

“What do you mean?”

He pointed.

“Our crew installed the original drywall two days ago.”

I stared at the wall.

“So who installed that?”

The officer answered.

“We don’t know yet.”

He pulled out his phone.

“Your house has apparently been used as a storage facility.”

“For what?”

He showed me photographs.

Construction materials.

Copper wiring.

Tools.

Appliances.

Even boxes of flooring.

All of it had been disappearing from several houses under construction throughout the neighborhood.

And investigators believed someone had been using my unfinished house to store everything.

The vehicles?

They weren’t there to protect them from snow.

They were part of the cover.

The person responsible had apparently been moving stolen construction materials into the garage and using random vehicles to make it look like the garage belonged to someone else.

But there was another problem.

The police had found fingerprints on the inside of the garage door.

One belonged to a subcontractor who had worked on several houses in the neighborhood.

His name was Mark.

I recognized him.

He had been on my property several times.

The police found him that afternoon.

But Mark wasn’t alone.

He had two accomplices.

And the three families whose vehicles were parked in my garage?

They weren’t involved.

Their vehicles had been taken without their knowledge while they slept.

The thieves had copied spare keys from unlocked vehicles and used them to move the cars around the neighborhood.

The cars were essentially camouflage.

A garage containing three ordinary family vehicles didn’t look like a construction site being used to hide stolen materials.

It looked occupied.

The police eventually discovered that more than $70,000 worth of construction materials had been stolen from unfinished homes.

My house had simply been the latest storage location.

But then the contractor told me something that made my blood run cold.

“There’s one thing I don’t understand.”

“What?”

“Why your house?”

I asked the officer.

He looked at the unfinished walls.

“Because your house is one of the only ones where the garage door could be opened remotely.”

I stared at him.

Then I remembered something.

A few weeks earlier, the contractor had given me temporary access to the garage through an app.

I had used it once.

The police asked to see the access logs.

There were dozens of openings.

Most occurred between midnight and 4 a.m.

Someone had been entering my garage for weeks.

While I slept.

While I was at work.

While I thought my unfinished house was sitting empty.

And the worst part?

The thieves hadn’t just been storing things there.

They had been sleeping there occasionally.

The police found an old blanket, food wrappers, bottled water, and a small folding chair behind the furnace area.

Someone had been spending nights inside my future home.

I stood in the middle of that unfinished garage, staring at the walls I’d spent months planning.

For the first time, I understood how vulnerable an empty construction site could be.

A few weeks later, the police arrested the three men.

The contractor replaced the compromised locks, reset every access code, and installed temporary security cameras.

The three innocent vehicle owners got their cars back.

And I paid for the towing.

But something funny happened afterward.

One of the neighbors came over and apologized for something I hadn’t even known about.

Apparently, he’d originally been the one who suggested the three vehicles be moved around the neighborhood.

He thought the cars were being moved by construction workers.

He had no idea they were being used as part of a theft scheme.

I told him I wasn’t angry with him.

I was angry at the people who had turned my unfinished house into their private warehouse.

The house was finally completed several months later.

Whenever I pull into my garage now, I still remember opening that door and seeing three vehicles sitting there.

At the time, I thought my biggest problem was an inconsiderate neighbor trying to avoid a little snow.

Instead, I had unknowingly discovered a theft operation operating right underneath my nose.

And I still laugh when I remember what the contractor said the next morning:

“The police are here investigating the theft of the…”

I interrupted him before he could finish.

“Cars?”

He said,

“No. Your house.”

I never looked at an empty construction site the same way again.

My house was being built in a neighborhood that was only a few years old.
