If the first provider had taken a second to actually examine the lump, he might have realized immediately that it didn’t fit the diagnosis he’d given her.<\/p>\n
Maybe things would have been different.<\/p>\n
Maybe not.<\/p>\n
We’ll never know.<\/p>\n
But we do know this:<\/p>\n
She should never have had to wait until she was crying in pain and bleeding before someone took a closer look.<\/p>\n
That night, I sat beside her hospital bed.<\/p>\n
She was exhausted.<\/p>\n
I was angry.<\/p>\n
But mostly, I was grateful that she finally had someone listening.<\/p>\n
I kept thinking about all the people who hear, \u201cIt’s probably nothing,\u201d and then spend days wondering whether they’re overreacting.<\/p>\n
