Sometimes the most important thing a doctor can do is simply take the time to look. \u2764\ufe0f"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My daughter complained about a lump near her groin area about a week and a half ago.<\/p>\n<p>It was pretty painful, so I took her to an urgent care center since it was a Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Because she had recently gotten her Pfizer shot, the APRN said it was probably just a swollen lymph node and that it would go away in about a month.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t bother to examine the lump.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t really look at it.<\/p>\n<p>He simply sent her on her way.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t with her because she was over 18, and because of COVID restrictions, they weren&#8217;t allowing extra people into appointments.<\/p>\n<p>So I trusted that she had been properly evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>But as the days passed, the pain got worse.<\/p>\n<p>And the lump got bigger.<\/p>\n<p>Then bigger.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, it was larger than a golf ball.<\/p>\n<p>She tried treating it with moist heating pads and ibuprofen.<\/p>\n<p>She kept trying to work because she is a cashier, but standing for hours became incredibly painful.<\/p>\n<p>She called out more than once.<\/p>\n<p>Then today, she called me in tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, it&#8217;s bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know what else to do.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed my keys and took her to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>This time, someone examined her.<\/p>\n<p>And almost immediately, we were told something that made my heart sink.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t a swollen lymph node.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t even close to where the lymph nodes the APRN had been talking about were located.<\/p>\n<p>I kept thinking about that first appointment.<\/p>\n<p>How quickly she had been dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>How nobody had taken the time to actually look at the lump.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t expecting the first provider to magically know exactly what it was.<\/p>\n<p>Medicine doesn&#8217;t work that way.<\/p>\n<p>But I expected an examination.<\/p>\n<p>I expected questions.<\/p>\n<p>I expected someone to notice that the location didn&#8217;t match the explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, my daughter went home believing she simply had to wait.<\/p>\n<p>So she waited.<\/p>\n<p>While it grew.<\/p>\n<p>While it hurt.<\/p>\n<p>While she struggled to stand at work.<\/p>\n<p>While she tried to manage it with a heating pad and ibuprofen.<\/p>\n<p>And now we were sitting in a hospital because it had started bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside her and held her hand.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me and said quietly,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something wasn&#8217;t right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed her fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She wasn&#8217;t imagining it.<\/p>\n<p>She wasn&#8217;t being dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>She was listening to her own body.<\/p>\n<p>And I realized how dangerous it can be when we let one reassuring explanation override what we&#8217;re actually experiencing.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes symptoms don&#8217;t follow the neat explanation we&#8217;re given.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they change.<\/p>\n<p>And when they do, we have to speak up.<\/p>\n<p>The most frustrating part was knowing how simple the missed opportunity had been.<\/p>\n<p>If the first provider had taken a second to actually examine the lump, he might have realized immediately that it didn&#8217;t fit the diagnosis he&#8217;d given her.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe things would have been different.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll never know.<\/p>\n<p>But we do know this:<\/p>\n<p>She should never have had to wait until she was crying in pain and bleeding before someone took a closer look.<\/p>\n<p>That night, I sat beside her hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>She was exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>I was angry.<\/p>\n<p>But mostly, I was grateful that she finally had someone listening.<\/p>\n<p>I kept thinking about all the people who hear, \u201cIt&#8217;s probably nothing,\u201d and then spend days wondering whether they&#8217;re overreacting.<\/p>\n<p>So if you&#8217;re reading this and something in your body is changing, getting bigger, becoming more painful, or simply doesn&#8217;t feel right, don&#8217;t be afraid to go back.<\/p>\n<p>Ask questions.<\/p>\n<p>Ask them to examine it again.<\/p>\n<p>Get another opinion if you need one.<\/p>\n<p>You are not wasting anyone&#8217;s time by asking for your symptoms to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter knew something wasn&#8217;t right.<\/p>\n<p>She just needed someone to listen.<\/p>\n<p>And sometimes, the difference between being reassured and being properly evaluated is as simple as one person taking the time to actually look.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My daughter complained about a lump near her groin area about a week and a half ago.
