it.

I used to judge people who cheated.

Honestly?

I judged them harshly.

My opinion was simple.

If you’re unhappy, leave.

If you want someone else, leave.

If your marriage is over, leave.

Anything else was selfish.

Cowardly.

Wrong.

Then I became the person I swore I would never be.

And that experience forced me to confront a difficult truth:

Understanding why something happens is not the same thing as excusing it.

For most of my life, relationships seemed straightforward.

You make a commitment.

You honor it.

If the relationship stops working, you end it before starting another one.

Simple.

At least in theory.

Then my marriage began unraveling.

Not dramatically.

Not overnight.

Slowly.

The way many marriages do.

One year at a time.

The arguments became more frequent.

The conversations became shorter.

The distance became normal.

God.

That’s the dangerous part.

Not when things fall apart.

When falling apart starts feeling ordinary.

My husband and I stopped communicating.

Not completely.

We still discussed bills.

Schedules.

Responsibilities.

The mechanics of life.

But the connection disappeared.

The friendship disappeared.

The feeling of being understood disappeared.

And when those things vanish slowly enough, you almost don’t notice.

You just learn to live without them.

Then his work assignment took him to a remote area.

Weeks away at a time.

Sometimes longer.

Honestly?

I thought the separation might help.

Maybe we’d miss each other.

Maybe distance would create appreciation.

Instead, it magnified everything that was already broken.

The rare conversations we had often ended in frustration.

The visits home felt tense.

Awkward.

Heavy.

Every interaction seemed to become another opportunity to disappoint one another.

When he came home, I often felt criticized.

Misunderstood.

Emotionally drained.

And every time I considered leaving, I talked myself out of it.

Things will get better.

This is just a difficult season.

Every marriage struggles.

I repeated those thoughts for years.

God.

Years.

Looking back now, I realize I wasn’t preserving the marriage.

I was postponing a decision.

Then I met someone.

And honestly, that’s where people usually stop listening.

Because once the affair enters the story, everything before it gets dismissed.

Maybe that’s fair.

Maybe it isn’t.

But the truth is that what happened next didn’t begin with romance.

It began with relief.

Relief from feeling invisible.

Relief from feeling dismissed.

Relief from feeling alone while technically married.

This person listened.

Not because he was extraordinary.

Because he paid attention.

He asked questions.

Remembered answers.

Made me feel like my thoughts mattered.

God.

It’s embarrassing how powerful that felt.

Not because the attention was unique.

Because I had been missing it for so long.

At first, everything seemed harmless.

Conversations.

Friendship.

Laughter.

The kind of connection people convince themselves is innocent because they need it to be.

Then boundaries shifted.

Gradually.

Almost imperceptibly.

And eventually I crossed a line I once believed I never would.

The affair happened.

And that part is mine to own.

Completely.

No excuses.

No qualifications.

No blame shifting.

I betrayed my marriage.

I should have ended the relationship first.

I should have made difficult choices instead of avoiding them.

Those things are true.

But something else is true as well.

The affair did not begin the day it became physical.

It began years earlier when loneliness moved into my marriage and neither of us dealt with it.

Again, that isn’t an excuse.

It’s context.

And context matters.

Because if we reduce every affair to simple villainy, we learn nothing from them.

We stop asking difficult questions.

We stop examining how relationships deteriorate.

We stop recognizing warning signs before they become disasters.

Honestly?

The experience changed how I view infidelity.

Not because I think it’s acceptable.

Because I understand it differently now.

Before, I saw cheating as a character issue.

Now I see it as a decision.

A terrible decision.

But still a decision made by flawed human beings, often inside complicated circumstances.

Some people cheat because they’re selfish.

Some because they’re entitled.

Some because they enjoy deception.

Those people exist.

But others arrive there through years of loneliness, resentment, disconnection, avoidance, and unmet emotional needs.

The outcome may be similar.

The path is often very different.

God.

That’s uncomfortable to admit.

Because people prefer simple stories.

Heroes.

Villains.

Good people.

Bad people.

Reality rarely cooperates.

The hardest lesson wasn’t learning that I was capable of making a terrible choice.

It was realizing how long I had ignored my own unhappiness before making it.

For years, I stayed in a marriage that no longer felt healthy.

Then I created even more damage by refusing to leave when I should have.

Nobody won.

Nobody benefited.

Pain multiplied.

That’s what regret looks like.

Not wishing you hadn’t been unhappy.

Wishing you’d responded to unhappiness differently.

Today, when people ask what I learned, my answer surprises them.

The lesson wasn’t that affairs happen because people stop loving their spouses.

The lesson was that unresolved problems don’t disappear simply because we avoid them.

Loneliness grows.

Resentment grows.

Distance grows.

And eventually something breaks.

For me, it was my integrity.

That’s difficult to admit.

But it’s true.

I don’t tell this story because I want sympathy.

And I certainly don’t tell it to justify what I did.

I tell it because the person I used to be believed cheating could only happen to certain kinds of people.

Weak people.

Selfish people.

People different from me.

I was wrong.

The uncomfortable truth is that most people are more complicated than that.

More fragile than that.

More capable of mistakes than they’d like to believe.

And understanding that reality hasn’t made me more accepting of infidelity.

It’s made me more honest about how it happens.

Because sometimes the most dangerous moment in a failing relationship isn’t when someone meets another person.

It’s when they convince themselves they can keep living indefinitely inside a marriage that stopped feeling safe years ago.

That’s where my story really began.

Long before the affair ever did.

I used
