I was waiting for a friend at a caf\u00e9 and had just settled into a table by the window when a woman barreled into me with several shopping bags.<\/p>\n
One of the bags smacked against my arm hard enough to make me spill some of my coffee.<\/p>\n
I looked up, expecting an apology.<\/p>\n
Instead, she pointed at the empty chairs across from me.<\/p>\n
“Move it. My kids need those seats.”<\/p>\n
I blinked.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry?”<\/p>\n
“Those seats,” she repeated impatiently. “My daughters want to sit by the window.”<\/p>\n
I glanced around the caf\u00e9. There were plenty of other tables available.<\/p>\n
“I’m actually waiting for someone,” I said politely.<\/p>\n
Her expression immediately darkened.<\/p>\n
“Then wait somewhere else.”<\/p>\n
I laughed nervously, assuming she was joking.<\/p>\n
She wasn’t.<\/p>\n
“I got here first,” I explained. “My friend should be here any minute.”<\/p>\n
The woman crossed her arms.<\/p>\n
“Listen carefully. I’m friends with the owner.”<\/p>\n
I said nothing.<\/p>\n
“One phone call and you’ll be banned from this place.”<\/p>\n
A few nearby customers started paying attention.<\/p>\n
Still, I kept my voice calm.<\/p>\n
“I don’t think that’s necessary.”<\/p>\n
She leaned forward.<\/p>\n
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”<\/p>\n
Her two teenage daughters looked embarrassed and avoided eye contact.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the woman kept talking louder and louder.<\/p>\n
She threatened to have me removed.<\/p>\n
She claimed the staff always did whatever she asked.<\/p>\n
She insisted the table was practically hers whenever she visited.<\/p>\n
While she rambled, I glanced down at the menu lying on the table.<\/p>\n
Then I noticed something.<\/p>\n
Printed neatly across the bottom corner were the words:<\/p>\n
“Family Owned Since 1987 \u2014 Managed by Daniel and Sarah Whitmore.”<\/strong><\/p>\n I stared at the names.<\/p>\n Whitmore.<\/p>\n That happened to be my friend’s last name.<\/p>\n The friend I was waiting for.<\/p>\n The friend who had invited me there.<\/p>\n The friend whose family owned the caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n I looked back at the woman.<\/p>\n “You said you’re friends with the owner?”<\/p>\n She smirked.<\/p>\n “Very close friends.”<\/p>\n I nodded slowly.<\/p>\n “That’s interesting.”<\/p>\n “Why?”<\/p>\n I turned the menu around and tapped the names.<\/p>\n “Because I’m waiting for Sarah Whitmore.”<\/p>\n The woman’s face instantly lost all color.<\/p>\n The confidence vanished.<\/p>\n “So…” I continued. “You’re saying Sarah told you she bans customers for sitting at empty tables?”<\/p>\n The woman froze.<\/p>\n Her daughters suddenly looked horrified.<\/p>\n “I\u2014well\u2014”<\/p>\n “And you’re close friends with her?”<\/p>\n The woman swallowed.<\/p>\n “I mean… we know each other.”<\/p>\n At that exact moment, the caf\u00e9 door opened.<\/p>\n My friend Sarah walked inside.<\/p>\n She spotted me and smiled.<\/p>\n “Sorry I’m late!”<\/p>\n Then she noticed the woman standing beside my table.<\/p>\n The smile disappeared.<\/p>\n “Oh.”<\/p>\n The woman looked like she wanted the floor to open beneath her.<\/p>\n Sarah walked over.<\/p>\n “Everything okay?”<\/p>\n Before I could answer, the woman started speaking rapidly.<\/p>\n “There was just a misunderstanding\u2014”<\/p>\n Sarah raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n “A misunderstanding?”<\/p>\n One of the daughters quietly muttered, “Mom told her she’d get banned.”<\/p>\n The entire caf\u00e9 seemed to go silent.<\/p>\n Sarah stared at the woman.<\/p>\n “She said what?”<\/p>\n Neither daughter looked willing to defend their mother.<\/p>\n In fact, they seemed relieved the truth was finally out.<\/p>\n The woman tried laughing.<\/p>\n “It was just a joke.”<\/p>\n “No,” one daughter said quietly. “It wasn’t.”<\/p>\n Sarah folded her arms.<\/p>\n “You’re not friends with the owners.”<\/p>\n The woman looked down.<\/p>\n “You’ve been telling people that for months.”<\/p>\n Now several customers were openly watching.<\/p>\n Sarah sighed.<\/p>\n “My parents own this caf\u00e9. I manage it. We’ve never met outside of you occasionally coming in here.”<\/p>\n The woman looked absolutely mortified.<\/p>\n For the first time since arriving, she had nothing to say.<\/p>\n After a painfully long silence, Sarah pointed toward another table.<\/p>\n “You’re welcome to stay and enjoy your coffee.”<\/p>\n The woman looked hopeful.<\/p>\n Then Sarah finished her sentence.<\/p>\n “But if you’re going to threaten customers and pretend you represent this business, you’ll need to leave.”<\/p>\n The daughters immediately grabbed their things.<\/p>\n “Come on, Mom.”<\/p>\n The woman didn’t argue.<\/p>\n She couldn’t.<\/p>\n A few seconds later, she hurried out the door with her head down while her daughters followed behind.<\/p>\n As soon as they were gone, the entire caf\u00e9 seemed to exhale.<\/p>\n One customer actually started clapping.<\/p>\n Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n Sarah sat down across from me and shook her head.<\/p>\n “She does this everywhere.”<\/p>\n “Seriously?”<\/p>\n “Unfortunately.”<\/p>\n I smiled and lifted the menu.<\/p>\n “Good thing somebody forgot to remove the owners’ names.”<\/p>\n Sarah laughed.<\/p>\n “Best advertisement we’ve ever had.”<\/p>\n The rest of the afternoon passed peacefully.<\/p>\n And as for the woman?<\/p>\n I never saw her again.<\/p>\n But I’ll never forget the look on her face when she realized the person she was threatening was sitting at a table waiting for the actual owner.<\/p>\n Turns out people who constantly tell others, “You have no idea who you’re dealing with,” are usually hoping nobody finds out who they’re really dealing with.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I was waiting for a friend at a caf\u00e9 and had just settled into a table by the window when a woman barreled into me with several shopping bags.
