Mom worked occasionally but never stayed at one job for very long.<\/p>\n

We moved from one rental to another.<\/p>\n
Every time a landlord sold a property or raised the rent, we packed our lives into cardboard boxes and started over somewhere else.<\/p>\n
As a child, I thought that was normal.<\/p>\n
When I turned eighteen, I moved out.<\/p>\n
I rented a tiny apartment.<\/p>\n
Worked full-time during the day.<\/p>\n
Picked up overtime whenever I could.<\/p>\n

“Dad…”<\/p>\n
“We’ve already talked about this.”<\/p>\n
“It’s different now.”<\/p>\n
“How?”<\/p>\n
“We’re so close.”<\/p>\n
“If you help us, we’ll finally have our dream house.”<\/p>\n
I took a deep breath.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
Silence.<\/p>\n
Then came the disappointment.<\/p>\n
“So that’s it?”<\/p>\n
“You’re choosing money over family?”<\/p>\n
I answered quietly.<\/p>\n
“No.”<\/p>\n
“I’m choosing responsibility.”<\/p>\n
“You taught me my entire childhood how difficult money can be.”<\/p>\n
“I’m listening to those lessons.”<\/p>\n
He hung up.<\/p>\n
For several weeks, neither parent answered my calls.<\/p>\n
Family members began contacting me.<\/p>\n
Some said I was selfish.<\/p>\n
Others hinted I should “just help.”<\/p>\n
Only my grandmother asked one simple question.<\/p>\n
“Can they truly afford the payments without you?”<\/p>\n
I answered honestly.<\/p>\n
“I don’t know.”<\/p>\n
She nodded.<\/p>\n
“Then you already know the right decision.”<\/p>\n
Six months later, my parents called again.<\/p>\n

I didn’t say,<\/p>\n
“I told you so.”<\/p>\n
There was no point.<\/p>\n
Instead, I said,<\/p>\n
“I’m proud of you.”<\/p>\n
A year later, I visited them.<\/p>\n
Their house wasn’t huge.<\/p>\n
The furniture didn’t match.<\/p>\n
The backyard needed work.<\/p>\n
But my father was planting flowers.<\/p>\n
My mother was painting the front door.<\/p>\n
They looked happy.<\/p>\n
As I was leaving, Dad stopped me.<\/p>\n
“I’m sorry.”<\/p>\n
“For making my problems feel like your responsibility.”<\/p>\n

The hardest word I ever said to my parents wasn’t “no.”<\/p>\n

“I trust that you can do this yourselves.”<\/p>\n
