A few days later, I was asked to meet with the department’s professional standards unit.<\/p>\n
Only then did the supervising investigator realize who I was.<\/p>\n
I had spent years working in the city’s civilian oversight system, reviewing complaints involving public agencies and recommending improvements to policies and training.<\/p>\n
I had no authority to decide the outcome of this officer’s case.<\/p>\n
But I did know how investigations were supposed to work.<\/p>\n
When the lead investigator recognized my name, he looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n
“I suppose you understand this process better than most.”<\/p>\n
