“Ma’am… you should probably come see this.” She expected the worst. What she saw was absolutely ridiculous.

My husband suddenly started smelling so terrible that the odor filled the entire room.

At first, I tried to ignore it.

Maybe he’d forgotten to shower.

Maybe his clothes needed washing.

But after a few days, the smell became impossible to miss.

It followed him around the house.

The bedroom smelled.

The living room smelled.

Even the car smelled.

I finally asked him,

“Are you okay?”

He looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because you smell… strange.”

He sniffed his shirt.

“I don’t smell anything.”

But I did.

And it was getting worse.

For weeks, I begged him to see a doctor.

“Something could be wrong,” I told him.

He kept insisting he was fine.

Finally, I scheduled an appointment with a urologist and went with him for support.

A few minutes after they disappeared into the exam room, the doctor stepped back out.

His face was bright red.

He was struggling not to laugh.

“Ma’am…”

My heart dropped.

“Is something seriously wrong?”

The doctor covered his mouth.

“You should probably come see this.”

I followed him into the exam room.

My husband was sitting on the examination table with his head hanging down.

He looked absolutely humiliated.

“What happened?” I asked.

The doctor finally burst out laughing.

“Your husband doesn’t have a medical condition.”

I looked at my husband.

“Then what is it?”

The doctor pointed toward his pants.

“Your husband has been wearing the same pair of underwear for almost a week.”

I stared at him.

“What?!”

My husband immediately protested.

“I thought they were clean!”

The doctor laughed even harder.

“They weren’t.”

I covered my face.

“Why would you think that?”

My husband shrugged.

“They looked clean.”

The doctor explained that my husband’s new laundry detergent had made the fabric smell fresh even though he had been repeatedly putting the same pair back on.

The smell wasn’t coming from an illness.

It was coming from a very simple problem.

My husband had apparently decided that if underwear didn’t look dirty, it could be worn again.

For days.

And days.

And days.

I stared at him in disbelief.

“You came to a urologist because you didn’t want to change your underwear?”

He looked embarrassed.

“I didn’t think it was a big deal.”

The doctor was practically crying from laughter.

“Sir, please change your underwear every day.”

My husband nodded.

“I will.”

“And shower.”

“Yes, Doctor.”

“And wash your clothes.”

“Yes.”

“And maybe don’t wear the same pants for a week either.”

My husband looked down.

The doctor stopped laughing.

“You’re wearing those pants today too, aren’t you?”

My husband quietly nodded.

I burst out laughing.

The doctor did too.

By the time we left the office, my husband was carrying a prescription he didn’t need—but a very important doctor’s order he absolutely did:

Buy more underwear.

That evening, I threw his entire laundry basket into the washing machine.

And from that day forward, whenever my husband complained about doing laundry, I simply reminded him,

“Remember the urologist?”

He never argued again.
