13. He wasn’t afraid I’d discover an affair. He was afraid I’d discover what was inside the little white box.

My husband and I had been married for nine years when he finally got the promotion he’d been chasing.

He was promoted to regional director.

He was thrilled.

I was proud of him.

And our four-year-old daughter, Lily, thought Daddy had simply become “the boss of everybody.”

So when his company invited families to a celebration at an upscale hotel, we dressed up and went together.

Everything was perfect.

There were flowers everywhere.

A live band was playing softly.

Servers carried trays of champagne and appetizers through the room.

People kept stopping my husband.

“Congratulations!”

“Well deserved!”

“You’ve earned it!”

He shook hands, smiled, and thanked everyone.

I stood beside him, proud.

Then Lily suddenly pointed across the room.

“Mommy!”

I smiled.

“What?”

She pointed toward a woman standing near the bar.

“That’s the lady with the worms!”

Several people nearby turned around.

I felt my face burn.

“Lily,” I whispered.

“Please don’t shout.”

She looked confused.

“But Mommy, that’s her.”

I knelt beside her.

“What worms, sweetheart?”

She pointed again.

“Daddy said she has worms.”

My husband froze.

I looked at him.

His face had suddenly gone completely white.

Lily continued.

“I saw them when we…”

She stopped.

Her eyes moved toward her father.

My husband shook his head almost imperceptibly.

“Lily,” he said quietly.

“Don’t.”

I stood.

“Don’t what?”

He looked at me.

“I think she means something else.”

But our daughter wasn’t confused.

She was certain.

I looked across the room at the woman.

She was in her forties, dressed elegantly, with dark hair pulled into a bun.

She was talking to two executives.

She glanced toward us.

The moment she saw my husband, her smile disappeared.

She turned away.

That was when I knew.

They knew each other.

And my husband desperately didn’t want me asking how.

I took Lily outside.

“Sweetheart, what did Daddy mean about the worms?”

She frowned.

“He said not to tell you.”

My stomach dropped.

“What did he say?”

She looked toward the ballroom.

“Daddy said she was sick.”

“Sick with what?”

“Worms.”

Then she added:

“Inside.”

I stared at her.

“What did you see?”

Lily thought for a moment.

“Daddy took me to the office.”

“When?”

“A few weeks ago.”

My heart began pounding.

“Why were you in Daddy’s office?”

“He said I could wait for him.”

“And the lady was there?”

She nodded.

“She was crying.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then what happened?”

Lily whispered:

“Daddy opened a box.”

“What box?”

“The little white box.”

My husband suddenly appeared behind us.

“Claire.”

I turned.

“You took our daughter to your office?”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“It was an accident.”

“You told her that woman had worms.”

He looked at Lily.

“That’s not what I said.”

Lily frowned.

“Yes it is.”

My husband crouched down.

“Sweetheart, why don’t you go back inside and get some cake?”

She ran toward the ballroom.

I waited until she was gone.

Then I looked at him.

“Who is she?”

He didn’t answer.

“Why was she crying in your office?”

Still nothing.

“What was in the box?”

He looked terrified.

“Claire, you need to trust me.”

I laughed.

“You’re asking me to trust you while refusing to answer a simple question.”

He finally whispered:

“She works for the company.”

“I know that.”

“She had a medical problem.”

“What kind?”

He hesitated.

“Cancer.”

I stared at him.

“And the worms?”

He looked down.

“Not worms.”

“Then what?”

“Worm-shaped tumors.”

I stared at him.

He continued.

“She had surgery scheduled. She was terrified.”

I felt a strange mixture of relief and confusion.

“Then why hide it from me?”

“Because she asked me not to tell anyone.”

I shook my head.

“Then why did Lily see her?”

“She came to my office to discuss her treatment.”

“Why were you involved?”

He hesitated.

“Because I was the one who found out.”

“How?”

He looked away.

“Because I knew her before she worked here.”

My heart sank again.

“Before?”

He nodded.

“She used to work at my old company.”

“Doing what?”

“Accounting.”

I studied his face.

“You knew her well?”

“Yes.”

“How well?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

I walked back into the ballroom.

The woman was still there.

I approached her.

She looked frightened.

“Hi,” she said.

“I’m Claire.”

“I know.”

I looked at her.

“You know my name?”

She nodded.

“Your husband talks about you.”

That surprised me.

“Really?”

She smiled sadly.

“He talks about you all the time.”

Then she touched my arm.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

She looked toward my husband.

“For making you think the worst.”

My husband came over.

“Rachel.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Then she looked at me.

“You deserve to know.”

My husband grabbed her arm.

“Not here.”

She pulled away.

“You can’t keep protecting me.”

I stared at them.

“What are you talking about?”

Rachel took a deep breath.

“My husband died six months ago.”

I didn’t understand.

“What does that have to do with my husband?”

She looked at him.

“Your husband was his best friend.”

I stared at my husband.

He nodded.

“Before we got married, Rachel and her husband were close friends of mine.”

“Why didn’t I know?”

“Because after her husband died, she disappeared.”

Rachel continued.

“I disappeared because I discovered something.”

“What?”

She looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“Someone inside the company had been stealing money.”

My husband stepped closer.

“Rachel…”

She ignored him.

“Millions.”

I looked at my husband.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Rachel answered.

“Because my husband discovered it before he died.”

My blood ran cold.

“Are you saying his death wasn’t an accident?”

Rachel nodded.

“That is what I believe.”

My husband looked at her.

“That’s why I helped you.”

I stared at him.

“Helped her do what?”

“Find the evidence.”

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“We’ve been investigating the company quietly for months.”

I suddenly understood the promotion.

My husband’s promotion hadn’t happened because he was being rewarded.

He had been promoted because the company wanted him closer to the financial records.

He wasn’t celebrating a promotion.

He was working an investigation.

Then Lily appeared beside me.

“Mommy!”

She was holding something.

A tiny white box.

My husband’s face went pale.

“Where did you get that?”

She smiled.

“From Daddy’s office.”

I opened it.

Inside was a small USB drive.

Rachel stared at it.

“That…”

My husband whispered:

“That’s the evidence.”

Suddenly, the lights in the ballroom flickered.

My husband grabbed my hand.

“We need to leave.”

“Why?”

He looked toward the entrance.

Three men had just walked into the room.

All three were senior executives.

And all three were staring directly at Rachel.

Rachel whispered:

“They found us.”

One of the men started walking toward us.

My husband stepped in front of me and Lily.

But then something unexpected happened.

The hotel’s security team surrounded the man.

Police officers entered from the opposite side.

The entire room fell silent.

My husband looked at me.

“I called them before we came tonight.”

I stared at him.

“You knew this would happen?”

“I hoped it wouldn’t.”

The officers arrested the three executives.

The USB drive contained years of financial records proving the theft.

It also contained evidence connecting the same men to the suspicious death of Rachel’s husband.

The investigation lasted months.

Several people were arrested.

Rachel eventually recovered from her illness.

And my husband finally told me everything.

As for Lily?

One evening, months later, she was drawing at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Remember the lady with the worms?”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

Lily giggled.

“I was wrong.”

I laughed.

“What did she have?”

“Tumors.”

I looked toward my husband.

He smiled.

Then Lily added:

“But Daddy said I shouldn’t say that word at the party.”

I raised an eyebrow.

My husband laughed.

“I was trying to protect her privacy.”

I shook my head.

“Next time, choose your words more carefully.”

He smiled.

“I learned my lesson.”

Lily went back to coloring.

I looked at my husband.

That night, I finally understood why he had gone pale when our daughter spoke.

He wasn’t afraid because he’d been cheating.

He wasn’t hiding another woman.

He was hiding a dangerous investigation.

And the little girl everyone thought had accidentally embarrassed her father at a company party had actually revealed the first clue to a crime that could have destroyed all of us.

Sometimes children don’t understand secrets.

They only repeat what they hear.

And sometimes…

one innocent sentence from a four-year-old is enough to bring the truth into the light.
