It started as a simple vocabulary lesson.
Then Little Johnny raised his hand.
And the entire classroom lost control.
One morning, a teacher decided to make her vocabulary lesson more fun by turning it into a game.
She wrote a letter on the board and challenged the students to think of words that started with it.
The class loved the idea.
Hands shot into the air.
One student gave an answer.
“Apple!”
“Very good,” said the teacher.
Another student answered.
“Animal!”
“Excellent.”
Everything was going smoothly.
The students were engaged.
The teacher was happy.
And for once, the lesson seemed almost too easy.
Then she noticed Little Johnny sitting in the back row.
He had a huge grin on his face.
And his hand was raised higher than anyone else’s.
Immediately, the teacher became suspicious.
Johnny had a reputation.
Whenever he looked that confident, trouble usually followed.
She tried calling on other students first.
But Johnny kept waving his hand.
“Please, Mrs. Parker! I know one!”
The teacher hesitated.
Then finally sighed.
“All right, Johnny. What’s your word?”
Johnny stood up proudly.
“The word is ‘dictate.'”
The teacher blinked.
Honestly, she was surprised.
That was actually a pretty good vocabulary word.
“Very nice, Johnny,” she said. “Can you use it in a sentence?”
Johnny nodded confidently.
“Sure.”
The classroom waited.
Johnny cleared his throat and said:
“My sister gave me a sweater for my birthday.”
The teacher frowned.
“Johnny, that sentence doesn’t contain the word ‘dictate.'”
Johnny smiled.
“Yes it does.”
The teacher shook her head.
“No, it doesn’t.”
Johnny grinned even wider.
Then he said:
“It does if you say it fast.”
The room went silent for about two seconds.
Then one student figured it out.
A second later, the entire classroom erupted with laughter.
Several kids nearly fell out of their chairs.
The teacher’s face turned bright red.
And Johnny sat back down looking very pleased with himself.
From that day forward, whenever someone mentioned vocabulary class, nobody remembered the lesson.
They remembered Johnny.
And the sentence that made the whole school laugh.
