Imagine sending your sweet, 13-year-old autistic son to summer camp hoping he’ll make friends, build confidence, and create happy memories—only to learn that he was bullied, robbed, told nobody liked him, and even threatened with violence.
That was our reality this week.
While he was at camp, other kids stole his money, took his paintball wristband, called him cruel names, and did everything they could to make him feel small.
As a parent, hearing those details shattered my heart.
No child should ever have to experience that.
Especially not a child as kind, caring, and genuine as my son.
What those kids didn’t know is who they were targeting.
They didn’t see the young man who always tries to make others feel included.
They didn’t see the young man who treats people with kindness even when they don’t return it.
They didn’t see the young man whose heart is bigger than most people will ever understand.
And they certainly didn’t realize how strong he truly is.
Because despite everything that happened, my son came home smiling.
Instead of focusing on the people who hurt him, he talked about the activities he enjoyed, the things he learned, and the moments that made him happy.
Think about that.
After being treated with cruelty, he still chose joy.
After being hurt, he still chose kindness.
After being targeted, he still focused on the good.
That kind of strength can’t be taught.
It comes from character.
It comes from resilience.
It comes from having a heart that refuses to become bitter.
The people who bullied him thought they were making him feel weak.
In reality, they revealed just how strong he is.
Because strength isn’t making someone else feel small.
Strength is refusing to let someone else’s cruelty change who you are.
And that’s exactly what my son did.
His spirit wasn’t broken.
His smile wasn’t taken away.
His kindness didn’t disappear.
If anything, this experience reminded me just how remarkable he is.
To my son:
Never let anyone else’s ignorance determine your worth.
Never let cruel words become your inner voice.
You are smart.
You are kind.
You are brave.
You are loved.
And you are stronger than the people who tried to tear you down.
I couldn’t be more proud of the young man you are becoming.
For every person who chooses cruelty, there are countless others who will appreciate your kindness, celebrate your uniqueness, and love you exactly as you are.
And I hope you never forget that. ❤️
